Ms. Kelly Hughes Appointed New Byrd Principal
At the Glen Rock Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 23, 2025, Ms. Kelly Hughes was appointed as the new principal of Richard E. Byrd Elementary School. A seasoned educator and school leader, Ms. Hughes brings more than 15 years of experience in elementary education and a deep commitment to fostering student-centered school communities.
Ms. Hughes comes to Glen Rock from the Westwood Regional School District, where she most recently served as an elementary school principal for the past three years. Her leadership experience also includes serving as Westwood’s Elementary Curriculum Coordinator and as an instructional specialist in literacy. Earlier in her career, she was a classroom teacher in grades 2 and 3. Ms. Hughes said she’s thrilled to have the opportunity to “contribute to a district with a long-standing reputation for excellence, collaboration, and a deep commitment to student success.”
“Glen Rock is a place where families, staff, and leaders work together with a shared vision to support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally,” she continued. “I’m especially energized by the opportunity to join the Byrd School community and build on the strong, positive school culture already in place. I look forward to working alongside dedicated educators, engaged families, and fellow school leaders to continue fostering an environment where all students feel valued, challenged, and supported.”
Throughout her career, Ms. Hughes has focused on building relationships and cultivating inclusive, engaging school environments. She describes her leadership style as transparent, student-centered, and grounded in continuous growth. “I believe strong leadership starts with clear communication, active listening, and building trust across the school community,” she explained. “I am visible, approachable, and honest with staff, students, and families. When people feel informed and included, they are more empowered to collaborate and lead alongside me.”
Whether launching new instructional initiatives, leading professional learning communities, attending community events, or greeting students at morning arrival, she believes in being a visible, supportive presence within the school. At the heart of every decision she makes are the students; she strives to ensure that every child is known, supported, and challenged. From implementing instructional practices to designing intervention systems to shaping school culture, she keeps student well-being and success at the center.
As she begins her new role, Ms. Hughes’ top priorities include getting to know each student–their strengths, interests, and individual needs; building strong relationships with families while establishing open lines of communication to foster trust and collaboration from the start; connecting with staff and District leaders to understand the unique strengths of the Byrd community; and observing instruction and classroom practices to celebrate success and support continued growth. She’s especially looking forward to becoming an active and present member of the community, participating in daily life and supporting a positive school culture.
From a young age, Ms. Hughes was drawn to roles that supported and nurtured children—whether working as a camp counselor, tutoring younger students, or taking child development electives in high school. Her passion for education was sparked by the impact teachers had on her own life, especially her third grade teacher, Mrs. Poiani. “She made me feel seen, loved, and cared for, while also holding me to high expectations,” she shared. “She showed me the power a teacher has to shape a child’s confidence and future.” As her career progressed, she felt called to make a broader impact beyond the classroom. Becoming a school leader has allowed her to support teachers, partner with families, and ensure that all students thrive in a safe and inspiring environment. That same sense of purpose and joy continues to drive her daily.
Ms. Hughes earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Towson University and a Master’s degree in Education Literacy with a concentration as a Reading Specialist from William Paterson University. She also holds a supervisor certification and completed her principal certification through NJEXCEL. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family and their German Shepherd, Riggs. She’s an avid reader and loves relaxing with a good book, especially at the beach, her favorite place to recharge.
As she begins this new chapter at Byrd, Ms. Hughes said, “I want to share how truly excited and honored I am to join this vibrant and welcoming community. From everything I’ve seen and heard, Byrd is a place where students are encouraged to take risks, celebrate their individuality, and grow both academically and emotionally, and that’s exactly the kind of environment I believe in.”
Ms. Hughes shared that she cannot wait to get to know each and every one of the Byrd students and families. “I look forward to learning your stories, your dreams, and all the things that make Byrd such a special place,” she said. “Together, we will continue to build on the strong foundation already in place—where every child is known, supported, and challenged to do his or her best. Let’s continue to live the message that defines Byrd School: Be Brave. Be Bold. Be Beautiful. Be Byrd!"
