Robert Ax Awards

Congratulations to the 2026 Robert Ax Award winners, Mr. Carl Helder, GRMS/HS Choir Director and Music Teacher, and Mrs. Lauren Slattery, GRMS Mathematics teacher.

This prestigious honor, established in 1968 by the Glen Rock Home and School Association (HSA), was created to commemorate the retirement of Robert Ax, the founding principal of Glen Rock High School. The award serves as a tribute to Ax’s legacy of leadership, integrity, and deep commitment to students. Presented annually to a staff member in both the middle school and high school, the Robert Ax Award recognizes educators who embody the values Mr. Ax held most dear: a love of people—particularly young people; an exceptionally high degree of personal integrity; and unwavering loyalty to colleagues, the community, and above all, to students.

For more than three decades, Mr. Carl Helder has made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students. Known for his approachable nature, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student success, he has built meaningful relationships that extend far beyond the classroom. “Whether offering encouragement during a difficult moment, celebrating a student’s accomplishments, or simply taking the time to listen, he has an extraordinary ability to make people feel valued,” said Mr. Jim Kurz, GRHS Health & Physical Education Teacher. “Countless students have benefited from that kindness and support, and many continue to stay in touch long after graduation because of the lasting impact he has had on their lives.”

Mr. Kurz also highlighted Mr. Helder’s leadership qualities, noting that his steady presence has earned the trust and respect of students, colleagues, and families alike. “He is calm in moments of stress, patient when challenges arise, and always focused on finding solutions rather than assigning blame,” said Mr. Kurz. “Students trust him, colleagues rely on him, and parents appreciate him. He is someone whose words and actions are always aligned. In a profession that asks so much of educators, he consistently demonstrates honesty, fairness, humility, and professionalism.”

Ms. Anna Lilikas, Glen Rock High School’s choir and orchestra director, spoke about the impact Mr. Helder has had not only on students, but also on the colleagues fortunate enough to work alongside him. She described him as a supportive mentor and collaborator whose guidance has been invaluable throughout her career. “Mr. Helder is the kind of colleague who always has time for others and who manages to make everyone around him feel capable and supported,” said Ms. Lilikas. Despite his far-reaching influence, Ms. Lilikas noted that Mr. Helder has never sought recognition for his accomplishments, preferring instead to focus on serving students and strengthening the school community.

“He reminds us daily that the true measure of an educator is not found in awards or accolades, but in the lives he touches,” said Ms. Lilikas. “Through decades of leadership in the performing arts, countless concerts, productions, honor ensembles, local performances, and opportunities for students, this individual has helped shape the cultural life of our school and community. His passion, expertise, and commitment have inspired generations of students and have elevated every program he has been a part of.”

Mr. Helder’s daughter, Josephine, offered a heartfelt perspective on the qualities that have defined him both as an educator and as a father. She shared that the same patience, kindness, and generosity that have made him such a respected figure at Glen Rock Public Schools are the qualities that have shaped their family life.

“Growing up, music was always a part of our lives, and his love for music inspired my own,” she said. “But more importantly, he taught me the value of treating people with respect, working hard, and always showing up for those who need you. I am so proud to be your daughter, and I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

Her remarks underscored the lasting impact Mr. Helder has had not only on generations of students and colleagues, but also on those closest to him, reflecting a lifetime dedicated to service, compassion, and leading by example.

As both a teacher and advocate for students, Mrs. Lauren Slattery has earned a reputation for her unwavering commitment to helping every child succeed. Colleagues describe her as a compassionate educator who consistently goes above and beyond to support students academically, emotionally, and personally, ensuring that each individual feels valued and capable of reaching their full potential. During her remarks, Mrs. Jessica Vajda, a special education teacher at Glen Rock Middle School, spoke about Mrs. Slattery’s student-centered approach and dedication to continuous growth as an educator.

“Whether she is taking extra time to explain a difficult concept, checking in with a student who may be struggling, or reflecting on how to improve instruction, her focus is always on what is best for students,” said Mrs. Vajda. “Teachers share that she is constantly reflecting and perfecting her practice to ensure every student is learning and growing. She approaches students with kindness, understanding, and respect, while maintaining professionalism and integrity in every interaction. Her words and actions align, and students know they can trust her because she follows through on her commitments. She doesn’t just teach students, she makes them feel heard, seen, valued, and supported.”

Mrs. Vajda also highlighted Mrs. Slattery’s leadership style, describing her as a selfless and collaborative professional who consistently brings out the best in those around her. She noted that colleagues repeatedly praised Mrs. Slattery for her ability to foster an environment built on trust, respect, and teamwork. “Her colleagues described her as flexible, levelheaded, open-minded, and always willing to listen to new ideas or strategies, regardless of where they come from,” said Mrs. Vajda. “She understands that the best outcomes happen when people feel respected and included.”

Mrs. Slattery creates a culture where others feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, and working together to solve challenges. She is known for being approachable, thoughtful, and understanding in her communication, while remaining calm and solution-focused even in difficult situations. “Her leadership is grounded not in recognition or praise, but in service to others,” said Mrs. Vajda. “Time and time again, colleagues referred to her as a ‘selfless leader,’ someone who consistently puts students, her team, and the school community first.”

The Glen Rock Public School District congratulates both recipients on this well-deserved recognition and thanks them for the lasting impact they continue to make on the lives of students, colleagues, and the greater school community.
